There's plenty to see in the night sky this month. Start with the Draconids on October 8–9.

Look for shooting stars after sunset as the Draconid meteor shower reaches its peak. With New Moon just two days later, the sky will be nice and dark.

Hello stargazers!
October is one of my favorite months for watching the night sky, with longer nights and lots happening overhead. This month, there are two familiar meteor showers to look out for, bright planets, and plenty more to spot while you’re out.
You don’t need a telescope; just go outside and look up. If you want to find out what you can see from your location, our October sky guide is a good place to start.
Clear skies! Eloise Elliott, journalist

What’s up in the sky this month, including meteor showers, bright planets, a series of occultations, and a star cluster with an ancient connection to Halloween.

Another meteor shower this month, the Orionids, is active from around October 2 to November 7. This year, bright moonlight can make the peak trickier to see.
